Addition Properties

In this topic, we learn to use properties and strategies to add numbers.

Topic: Addition - Number Line

  • To add two numbers, use a number line
For example, to add 13 and 3, start from 13 and move 3 units to the right

  • To add some numbers, we can use properties. For example, to add 7 and 8, we can double 7 and add 1

Topic: Addition Properties

  • Commutative Property states that if the order of the addends is changed, the sum remains the same. 4 + 5 = 5 + 4

  • Identity Property states that if one addend is zero, the sum is the same as the other addend. 7 + 0 = 7

  • Associative Property states that grouping the addends does not change the sum. (3 + 8) + 2 = 3 + (8 + 2)
