Estimate Sums

In this topic, we will learn to estimate sums by rounding.

Topic: Estimate Sums

  • To estimate the sum of two numbers, round each number and add

  • For example: 349 + 374
349 is between 300 and 400. It is closer to 300.
374 is between 300 and 400. It is closer to 400.
    300 + 400 = 700

  • When two numbers have different number of digits, it is best to round to the highest place of the smaller number

Topic: Estimate Sums - Word Problems

  • Sometimes an exact sum is needed. However, in some cases, only an approximate answer can solve our problem. We can estimate by finding an answer that is close to the exact answer
