Estimation of Sums using Rounding

In this topic, we learn to estimate the sums using rounding.

Topic: Use Rounding

  • We can estimate the sums whenever an exact answer is not required

  • To estimate the sum, round each addend to the nearest whole number, and then add

  • To round a decimal to the nearest whole number, compare the digit next to the decimal point to 5; if it is 5 or greater than 5, round up; else round down. For example 2.6 rounds to 3 and 3.1 rounds to 3
