Addition and Subtraction - Like Denominators

This topic covers addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. Addition and subtraction of mixed numbers with like denominators are also covered.

Topic: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

  • Like fractions – Fractions with the same denominator are called like fractions.
For example: 2/5 and 1/5 are like fractions as their denominator is same (that is 5)

  • To add/subtract two or more like fractions simply add/subtract their numerators to get the new numerator and the denominator remains the same

Topic: Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers

  • Like fractions – Fraction with the same denominator are called like fractions.
For example: 2/5 and 1/5 are like fractions as their denominator is same (that is 5)

  • To add a whole number to a fraction, multiply and divide the whole number by some number such that its denominator becomes equal to the denominator of the fraction

  • To add/subtract two or more like fractions simply add/subtract their numerators to get the new numerator and the denominator remains the same

Topic: Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Numbers

  • A mixed number has two parts: the whole number part and the fraction part.
For example: In 3 7/12, 3 is the whole number part and 7/12 is the fraction part, having numerator 7 and denominator 12

  • To add two mixed numbers:
    a) Simply add their whole number parts.
    b) Then add their fraction parts.
    For Example:
    3 1/7 + 4 5/7 = 7 6/7
