Add Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators

This topic deals with the addition of fractions mixed numbers with like denominators. We also learn to use models to add fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators.

Topic: Add Fractions with Like Denominators

  • We can use models to add the fractions with like denominators. For example:
3/8 represents a circle with 8 equal parts, out of which 3 are shaded.
1/8 represents a circle with 8 equal parts, out of which 1 is shaded.
    3/8 + 1/8 = 4/8 = a circle with 8 equal parts, out of which 4 are shaded

  • To add fractions with like denominators, add the numerators and retain the common denominator

Topic: Add Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators

  • To add two mixed numbers, first add the fraction parts, then add the whole number parts; simplify

  • Sometimes we need to rename to simplify the sum. For example, 36 7/5 = 36 + 5/5 + 2/5
