Subtract Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators

This topic deals with the subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators. We also learn to use models to subtract fractions.

Topic: Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators

  • We can use models to subtract the fractions with like denominators. For example, to find 3/8 – 1/8:
3/8 can be modeled as 3 equal rectangles, each rectangle representing 1/8.
    Take away 1/8 from 3/8 to model 3/8 – 1/8

  • To subtract fractions with like denominators, subtract the numerators, retain the common denominator, and then simplify

Topic: Subtract Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators

  • To subtract two mixed numbers, first subtract the fraction parts, then subtract the whole number parts, add the two results and then simplify

  • Sometimes we need to rename to simplify the difference. For example, 3 1/4 – 1 3/4 = 2 5/4 – 1 3/4
