Multiply Whole Numbers by Decimals

This topic covers the concept of multiplying whole numbers by decimals. In this process, the student is also made to predict the answer through estimation.

Topic: Multiplication by Counting Digits

  • When multiplying numbers that contain decimals, first multiply as with whole numbers, and then count the number of decimal places in each factor

  • Add the total number of places from both factors. Move the decimal point that many places to the left in the product

Topic: Multiples of Ten

  • Use patterns to multiply decimals by multiples of 10

  • The number of zeros in the multiple of 10 tells you how many places to move the decimal point to the right

  • We notice that the product of a decimal and a multiple of 10 may also be a decimal
