Write and Solve Expressions and Equations

In this topic, we learn to write and solve multiplication and division expressions and equations.

Topic: Write and Solve Expressions

  • Number sentences that do not contain any equality or inequality symbol (=, >, <) are called expressions

  • To find the value of the expression: (4 x 5) - 3
Use the rules for the order of operations:
PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)
    4 x 5 is 20, and 20 - 3 is 17

Topic: Write and Solve Equations

  • Number sentences containing the equality symbol are called equations

  • To find: (3 x 5) - 4 = y
Use the rules for the order of operations:
PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)
    15 - 4 = y; 11 = y

  • Symbols, letters, blanks, or question marks used in place of missing information are called variables. For example, in the equation
    (3 x 5) - 4 = y; y is the variable
