Functions and Graphing Functions

In this topic, we learn to represent situations and patterns with tables and equations. We also learn to plot ordered pairs and graph linear equations.

Topic: Functions

  • To find the relationship between two functions, we can use a table

  • A function is an equation, which gives the relation between variables and represents a situation

  • The value of a function can be calculated by substituting the value of a known variable

Topic: Functions with Constants

  • To find the relationship between two functions, we can use a table

  • A function is an equation, which gives the relation between variables and represents a situation

  • The value of a function can be calculated by substituting the value of a known variable

  • For a unique value of a variable, there is only one value of the function

Topic: Graphing Functions

  • Steps to follow to graph the equation:
    Step 1: Write the equation
Step 2: Make a function table
    Step 3: Graph the equation

Topic: Locate and Plot a Point

  • Steps to use a coordinate graph:
    Step 1: Start at (0, 0)
Step 2: Count the number of units to the point to the right. Label it as x
Step 3: Count the number of units up to the point. Label it as y
Step 4: The coordinates of the point are (x, y)

  • Steps to plot a point (x, y) on the graph:
    Step 1: Start at (0, 0)
Step 2: Move x units right. From there move y units up
Step 3: Place a point and label it
