Solving Equations by Multiplying, Dividing

How does one write and solve multiplication and division equations? This topic covers this concept and more.

Topic: Multiplication Equations

  • 3x = 12 is a multiplication equation

  • To calculate the value of x in this equation, divide both the sides of the equation by the coefficient of x (that is 3)

  • Multiplication and division are inverse operations and they can undo each other.

    So, to solve a multiplication equation, we use a division operation

  • In the expression '3x', 3 is the coefficient of x

Topic: Division Equations

  • To calculate the value of  ‘a’ from the above equation, we need to multiply both the sides of the equation by 3

  • Multiplication and division are inverse operations and they can undo each other.
    So, to solve a division equation, we use a multiplication operation

  • The equation a/3 = 12  is a division equation

  • On multiplication, the equation becomes:
    a/3 x 3 = 12 x 3
    a = 36
