Circumference and Perimeter

This topic teaches us to calculate the perimeter of polygon and circumference of a circle.

Topic: Perimeter of Squares and Rectangles

  • The distance around a shape is called perimeter. In other words, perimeter is the distance around the outside of a closed figure

  • Perimeter is the sum of length of all the sides of a polygon

  • Perimeter of a rectangle with length l and width w is 2 x (l + w)

  • Perimeter of a square with side s is 4 x s

  • Remember to name the unit of length used to measure the shape

Topic: Perimeter of Other Shapes

  • Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a closed figure

  • Perimeter is the sum of all the side lengths of a polygon

  • Perimeter of a regular polygon of n equal sides with each side s is n x s

  • Remember to name the unit of length used to measure the shape

Topic: Find Circumference

  • The perimeter of a circle has a special name. It is called the circumference

  • A diameter is a line segment that passes through the center of the circle and has both the end points on the circle

  • A radius is a line segment with one endpoint at the center of the circle and the other endpoint on the circle

  • The distance around a circle is called the circumference. The ratio of the circumference to the diameter, c/d, is the same for any circle and is called ∏, read as "pi"

  • The value of p is approximated to either 3.14 or 22/7

Topic: Find Missing Measurements

  • Perimeter is the sum of length of all the sides of a polygon

  • Perimeter of a rectangle with length l and width w is 2 x (l + w)

  • Perimeter of a square with side s is 4 x s

  • Use the formulas and equate the known and unknown lengths

  • Remember to name the unit of length used to measure the shape
