Pictographs and Bar Graphs

This topic deals with making and reading pictographs and bar graphs. We also learn to read double bar graphs.

Topic: Read and Make Pictographs

  • We can use a pictograph to display data

  • We use a symbol and a key to represent data in a pictograph

  • For example, to represent number of boxes of cookies we can use a cookie as a symbol which represents 10 boxes of cookies

  • Sometimes we use half of a symbol to represent a value

Topic: Make and Interpret a Bar Graph

  • The scale must include all of the data values. The interval separates the scale into equal parts

  • The scale and interval should be chosen such that all the data values can be clearly marked on the graph

  • The horizontal axis is labeled with the categories and the vertical axis is labeled with the scale (data values)

  • The height of each bar represents the frequency for that category

Topic: Double Bar Graph

  • A Double bar graph is similar to a single-bar graph. Different colors are used for each set of data
