Order and Compare Decimals

In this topic, we learn to compare decimals using number line and place-value chart. We also learn to order decimals using place value.

Topic: Compare Decimals

  • On a number line the magnitude of the numbers increases as we move from left to right. The number on the left is less than the number on the right

  • In a place-value chart, line up the decimal points. Compare each place, starting at the greatest place

  • Compare the digits at the ones place. The decimal with the greater digit at the ones place is greater. If the digits at the ones place are equal, compare the tenths digit, and so on

Topic: Order Decimals

  • In a place-value chart, line up the decimal points. Compare each place, starting at the greatest place

  • Compare the digits at the ones place. The decimal with the greater digit at the ones place is greater. If the digits at the ones place are equal, compare the tenths digit, and so on

  • For example: 0.430 < 0.471 < 0.474

  • Decimals that name the same number are called equivalent decimals. For example, 0.43 = 0.430
