Round Decimals

In this topic, we learn to round decimals to the nearest whole number and the nearest tenth.

Topic: Round to the Nearest Whole Number

  • A number can be rounded to the nearest whole number using various methods:
    a. Using Number Line
    b. Using Place Value

  • To round a number using a number line, find the whole number to which the number to be rounded is closer

  • To round a number using place value, follow these steps:
    Step 1: Identify the digit to be rounded
    Step 2: Look at the digit to the right of the digit that needs to be rounded
    Step 3: Compare the digit to 5
    If it is less than 5, round down
    If it is 5 or greater than 5, round up
    For example: 26.95 rounds to 27

Topic: Round to the Nearest Tenth

  • To round a number to nearest tenth, follow these steps:
    Step 1: Identify the digit to be rounded
    Step 2: Look at the digit to the right of the digit that needs to be rounded
    Step 3: Compare the digit to 5
    If it is less than 5, round down
    If it is 5 or greater than 5, round up
    For example: 10.49 rounds to 10.5
