Multiplying Decimals

In this topic, we learn to multiply decimals by whole numbers and by decimals. We also learn to multiply decimals by 10 and powers of 10. Some application problems are also covered.

Topic: Multiplication by 10 or Power

  • 1) When a decimal  is multiplied by 10, the product is obtained simply by shifting the decimal point to the right by as many places as there are zeros in 10

  • When a decimal is multiplied by the power of 10, the product is obtained simply by shifting the decimal point to the right by as many places as there are zeros in the   power of 10 (that is, 100, 1000, 10000 and so on)

Topic: Multiplication by Whole Number

  • To multiply a decimal by a whole number:

     

    1) Multiply them like whole numbers

  • 2) Then count the number of digits to the right of the decimal point and insert the decimal point in the product after the same number of digits counted from right to left

Topic: Multiplication by Decimal

  • To multiply a decimal by a decimal:

    1) Multiply them like whole numbers.

  • Then count the number of digits to the right of each decimal point, add the count, and insert the decimal point in the product after the same number of digits counted from right to left
