Rounding Decimal Numbers

The topic covers rounding decimals. We learn to round decimals to the nearest whole number, ten, hundred, and so on. We also learn to round decimals to the nearest tenth, hundredth, and so on. The topic also covers some application problems.

Topic: Round to Nearest Whole Number

  • 1) Rules for rounding a digit at a given position:

Step 1: Identify the digit to be rounded

  • Step 2: Look at the digit to the right of the digit that needs to be rounded

  • Step 3: If the digit to the right is 5 or greater, we will add 1 to the digit to be rounded. If digit is 4 or less, the digit to be rounded remains the same

  • Replace all the digits to the right of  the digit that has been rounded with zeros

  • Zeros at the end (to the right of the decimal point) do not serve as placeholders and can be ignored after rounding the decimal
