Solving Decimal Equations

In this topic we will learn to solve one-step equations involving decimals.

Topic: Addition and Subtraction Equations - Decimals

  • Addition and subtraction are inverse operations

  • For addition equations, use subtraction. For example, in
    q + 10.3 = 12.5
10.3 is added to q, so subtract 10.3 from both sides of the equation to get the value of q

  • For subtraction equation, use addition. For example, in
    p - 3.2 = 7.8
3.2 is subtracted from p, so add 3.2  to both sides of the equation to get the value of p

Topic: Multiplication and Division Equations

  • Division and multiplication are inverse operations

  • For multiplication equation, use division. For example, in
    4 y = 8.2

4 is multiplied by y, so divide both sides of the equation by 4 to isolate y

  • For division equation, use multiplication.
    For example, in
    z/3 = 1.5

z is divided by 3, so multiply both sides of the equation by 3 to isolate z
