Solving Two Step Inequalities

This topic covers the concept of solving inequalities in two steps, using the familiar methods of addition or subtraction; multiplication or division. Word problems of a similar kind are also included.

Topic: Solving Two Step Inequalities

  • When you add or subtract the same number to both the sides of an inequality, the statement will still be true

  • When you multiply or divide both the sides of an inequality by the same positive number, the statement will still be true

  • When you multiply or divide both the sides by the same negative number, you need to reverse the direction of the inequality symbol for the statement to be true

  • To solve inequalities that have more than one operation, perform the operations in reverse order

  • An open circle on the graph indicates that the corresponding number is not a part of the solution set. A closed circle on the graph indicates that the corresponding value is a part of the solution set
