In this topic, we learn to apply the properties of exponents. We learn to multiply and divide exponents with the same base. We also cover raising power to a power.
Topic: Multiply, Divide, and Raise Power to a Power
To multiply powers with the same base, keep the base and add the exponents. For example, 35. 38 = 35 + 8 = 313
To divide powers with the same base, keep the base and subtract the exponents. For example, 38/35 = 38 - 5 = 33
To raise a power to a power, keep the base and multiply the exponents. For example, (54)2 = 54 . 2 = 58
Powers with different bases cannot be combined and expressed as one power. For example, 35. 28; 58/35
Topic: Application Problems
To multiply powers with the same base, keep the base and add the exponents. For example, 35. 38 = 35 + 8 = 313
To divide powers with the same base, keep the base and subtract the exponents. For example, 38/35 = 38 - 5 = 33
