Equivalent Fractions and Simplification

In this topic, we learn to identify, write, and convert between fractions and mixed numbers. In addition, we learn to write fractions as decimals, and vice versa.

Topic: Equivalent Fractions and Mixed Numbers

  • To make fractions equivalent to a given fraction, multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number

  • Equivalent fractions have the same value

  • To check if two fractions are equivalent, reduce them to their simplest forms and check if they are same

  • To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction, use the following expression:
Improper fraction = [(Whole number · Denominator) + Numerator] / Denominator

Topic: Equivalent Fractions and Decimals

  • To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator

  • Use the place value to write a terminating decimal as a fraction. Use the place value of the last digit to the right of the decimal point as the denominator of the fraction

  • To check for equivalence between a fraction and a decimal, convert any of the two into the other form and compare
