Division of Fractions and Mixed Numbers

This topic covers the division of fractions and mixed numbers using reciprocal of a number.

Topic: Reciprocal

  • If we invert a fraction by switching the numerator and denominator, we form the reciprocal of the fraction.

For example, reciprocal of 3/4 is 4/3

  • The product of a number and its reciprocal is 1.

    For example,
    3/4 x 4/3 = 1

Topic: Divide Fractions and Mixed Numbers

  • Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. For example,
    (3/4)/(1/2) = (3/4) x (2/1)

  • To simplify, cancel the common factors.

    For example,
    (3/4) x (2/1) = (3/2) x (1/1)

  • To write a fraction in the simplest form, cancel the common factors
