Equivalent Fractions

To find equivalent fractions of a fraction we either multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by the same number

Method 1:

Multiply the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/4 by a number (say 4);

2/4 x 4/4 = 8/16

Method 2:

Divide the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/4 by a number (say 2)
2/4 ÷ 2/2 = 1/2

So, 2/4 = 8/16 = 1/2

Two fractions are equivalent if the numerator and denominator of one fraction, when multiplied or divided by the same number, produces resultant fraction which is same as the other fraction

A fraction is in the simplest form if the GCF of numerator and denominator is 1

To find the simplest form of a fraction, we need to follow the 3 simple steps

Step 1: Find the prime factorization of the numerator and the denominator

Step 2: Find the common factors. Calculate the product of common factors to obtain the GCF

Step 3: Divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCF
