Equivalent Fractions

In this topic we learn to write equivalent fractions. The concepts of finding the missing number that makes the fraction equivalent and writing the fractions in simplest form are also included.

Topic: Equivalent Fractions

  • To find equivalent fractions of a fraction we either multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by the same number

  • Method 1:

    Multiply the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/4 by a number (say 4);

    2/4 x 4/4 = 8/16

  • Method 2:

    Divide the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/4 by a number (say 2)
    2/4 ÷ 2/2 = 1/2

    So, 2/4 = 8/16 = 1/2

Topic: Make Fractions Equivalent

  • Two fractions are equivalent if the numerator and denominator of one fraction, when multiplied or divided by the same number, produces resultant fraction which is same as the other fraction

Topic: Fractions in Simplest Form

  • A fraction is in the simplest form if the GCF of numerator and denominator is 1

  • To find the simplest form of a fraction, we need to follow the 3 simple steps

    Step 1: Find the prime factorization of the numerator and the denominator

  • Step 2: Find the common factors. Calculate the product of common factors to obtain the GCF

  • Step 3: Divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCF
