Rename an Improper Fraction

In this topic, we learn to write a mixed number and how to rename an improper fraction. We also learn how to rename a mixed number as a decimal.

Topic: Rename a Mixed Number as an Improper Fraction

  • Mixed numbers are used to name whole groups and part of another group

  • A mixed number is written as ‘a b/c’ where a represents whole groups and b/c represents the fraction or part of another group

  • A mixed number is the sum of the whole number and the fraction (a b/c = a + b/c)

  • An improper fraction is a fraction that has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator

  • Improper fraction = (Whole number x Denominator + Numerator)/Denominator

Topic: Rename an Improper Fraction as a Mixed Number or a Decimal

  • To rename an improper fraction as a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator

  • Write the quotient as the whole number, remainder as the numerator; the divisor as the denominator

  • To rename a mixed number as a decimal, first divide the numerator of the fraction part by the denominator to find the decimal equivalent of the fraction part

  • Add the whole number to the decimal to get the decimal equivalent of the mixed number

Topic: Rename a Decimal as a Mixed Number

  • To rename a decimal as a mixed number, first rename the decimal part as a fraction in simplest form

  • For example, in 2.5, 2 is the whole number and 0.5 is the decimal part

  • 0.5 = 5/10 = 1/2 in simplest form

  • Add the whole number to the fraction; 2.5 = 2 + 1/2 = 2 1/2
