Simplify Fractions and Equivalent Fractions

In this topic we learn how to reduce fraction to their simplest form. We also learn to find equivalent fractions.

Topic: Simplify Fractions

  • When the GCF of numerator and denominator is 1, the fraction is said to be in its simplest form

  • We can either divide by their GCF or use Prime Factorization method to express a fraction in the simplest form

  • To find a fraction in simplest form, divide the numerator and the denominator by their GCF

  • To find a fraction in simplest form, cancel the common prime factors of numerator and denominator and write the product of remaining factors

Topic: Equivalent Fractions

  • To find equivalent fractions of a fraction we either multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by the same number

  • For example, we have a fraction 2/4 and we need to find its equivalent fractions

  • Multiply the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/4 by a number (say 4)
    2/4 x 4/4 = 8/16

  • Divide the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/4 by a number (say 2)
    2/4 ÷ 2/2 = 1/2. So, 2/4 = 8/16 = 1/2
