Comparing and Ordering Fractions

This topic deals with comparing and ordering fractions.

Topic: Like Denominators

  • To compare fractions that have the same denominators, just look at the numerators. The fraction with the larger numerator is larger

  • '<' represents 'less than'
    '>' represents 'greater than'
    '=' represents 'equal to'

Topic: Like Numerators

  • To compare fractions that have the same numerator, just look at the denominators. The fraction with the larger denominator is smaller and the fraction with smaller denominator is larger

  • <' represents 'less than'
    '>' represents 'greater than'
    '=' represents 'equal to'

Topic: Unlike Numerators and Unlike Denominators

  • To compare two fractions with unlike numerator and unlike denominator, use equivalent fractions with the same denominator or decimal equivalent of the fractions

  • One way to compare fractions that always works is to find the equivalent fraction that have the same denominator and then compare the numerators

  • To compare fractions that have the same denominators, just look at the numerators. The fraction with the larger numerator is larger

  • Larger decimal equivalent means larger fraction for example 0.2 > 0.175

Topic: Order Fractions

  • To compare the fractions with unlike numerators and unlike denominators, find their equivalent fractions with same denominator

  • To compare fractions that have the same denominators, just look at the numerators. The fraction with the larger numerator is larger

  • To compare fractions that have the same numerators, just look at the denominators. The fraction with the larger denominator is smaller fraction
