Properties of Circles

In this topic, we will learn to identify parts of a circle, radius, diameter, and chord. We will also learn to interpret a circle graph and to find the central angle measures.

Topic: Parts of a Circle

  • A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are at the same distance from a given point, called the center of a circle. A circle is named by its center

  • Radius (plural radii) is a line segment whose endpoints are the center of a circle and any point on the circle respectively

  • Diameter is a line segment that passes through the center of a circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle

  • Chord is a line segment whose endpoints are any two points on a circle

  • An arc is a part of a circle named by its end points

Topic: Circle Graphs

  • Circle graphs represent the relative quantities of data categories, each being represented as a sector of the circle

  • The size of the sector for each category is proportional to the quantity

  • A sector of a circle is the part of the circle enclosed by two radii and an arc connecting them

  • The central angle of a circle is an angle formed by the two radii

  • The angle measure of a circle is 3600
