Graphs, Functions, and Tables

This topic deals with graphing and identifying functions. It also covers the concept of using tables and graphs to generate different representations of data.

Topic: Graphing an Equation of a Line

  • A coordinate plane is a plane containing a horizontal number line, the x-axis, and a vertical number line, the y-axis

  • The coordinates of a point are given by an ordered pair. An ordered pair is a pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane

  • To plot an equation on graph, find the ordered pairs and plot them on a graph to form a line

Topic: Identifying Functions

  • A function operates according to a rule to produce exactly one output value for each input value

  • The input is the value substituted into the function. The output is the value that results from the substitution of a given input into the function

  • The domain is the set of all possible input values, and the range is the set of all possible output values

  • In a function, one value of x (input) cannot have more than one corresponding value of y (output)

  • For more than one value of x (input), the function may have the same value of y (output)

Topic: Generate Different Representations of Data

  • Tables and graphs can be used to generate different representations of data

  • Plot the ordered pairs on the graph by moving ‘x’ units left/right and ‘y’ units up/down on a graph

  • Look for a pattern in the ordered pairs to find the equation
