The Coordinate Plane

In this topic we will learn to locate and graph points on a coordinate plane.

Topic: Identify Quadrants

  • The first quadrant represents all the points with positive x and positive y

  • The second quadrant represents all the points with negative x and positive y

  • The third quadrant represents all the points with negative x and negative y

  • The fourth quadrant represents all the points with positive x and negative y

Topic: Identify Coordinates

  • To identify the coordinates of a point (x, y) follow the steps listed below

  • a) Move x units left/right of the origin. Move right if x is positive. Move left if x is negative

  • b) From there, move y units up/down. Move up if y is positive. Move down if y is negative

Topic: Applications of the Coordinate Plane

  • Identify the vertices on the coordinate plane

  • To identify the coordinates of a point (x, y) follow the steps listed below

    a) Move x units left/right of the origin. Move right if x is positive. Move left if x is negative

    b) From there, move y units up/down. Move up if y is positive. Move down if y is negative

  • Count the unit squares within the rectangle to get the area. The unit of area is square units

  • The perimeter of a rectangle is given by P = 2 (length + width)
