Order, Graph, and Compare Integers

How does one graph and compare integers? How do we describe a situation using an integer? This topic covers these concepts along with the concept of opposite and absolute value.

Topic: Integers on Number Line

  • An integer is any number from the set {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 …} where means continues without end

  • To graph an integer on the number line, do the following:
    1) Draw a number line
    2) Identify the location of the integer on the number line
    3) Draw a dot at the location that represents that integer

  • Integer on the right is always greater than the integer on the left on the number line

  • Positive Integers: Integers that are on the right side of zero on the number line are called Positive Integers

  • Negative Integers:

Integers that are on the left side of zero on the number line are called Negative Integers

Topic: Integer to Describe Situation

  • An integer is any number from the set {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 …} where means continues without end

  • Gain, deposit and above represent an increase which means positive (+)

  • Below, withdraw and lost represent a decrease which means negative (-)

Topic: Opposite and Absolute value

  • An integer is any number from the set {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 …} where means continues without end

  • Opposite is a number which is at the same distance from zero as the original number on the number line but in the opposite direction

For example: -2 and +2 are at the same distance from zero (that is 2)

So, -2 and +2 are opposites

  • |n| is the symbol for absolute value of n, where n may be positive or negative

  • Absolute value is the distance of a number from zero on the number line.

For example: Distance of -5 from zero is 5.

    So, |-5| = 5
