In this topic, we learn to collect and organize data using tally charts and line plots.

Topic: Make and Interpret a Tally Chart and Frequency Table

  • You can keep track of data in a tally chart by making a mark for each thing counted

  • Each time a value occurs, mark ‘/’ to the right of the value in the tally chart

  • To read a value from a tally chart, count the number of tallies to the right of the value

Topic: Make and Interpret a Line Plot

  • Line plots and tally charts are two methods of organizing data

  • To make a line plot, draw a number line. Mark the lowest value of the data set on the extreme left. Mark the greatest value of the data set on the extreme right

  • Above each value, mark a ‘X’ for each time the value occurs

  • The number of Xs above each value gives the number of times the value occurs
