Comparing Decimals using Models, Number Line and Place Value Chart

This topic deals with comparing decimals using models, number line, and place value charts. We also learn to order the decimals using the place values.

Topic: Compare Decimals

  • In a number line the magnitude of the numbers increases as we move from left to right. The number on the left is less than the number on the right

  • In a place value chart, line up the decimal points. Compare each place, starting at the greatest place

  • Compare the digits in ones place. The decimal with the greater digit at the ones place is greater. If the digits at ones place are equal, compare the tenths digit, and so on

Topic: Order Decimals

  • In a place value chart, line up the decimal points. Compare each place, starting at the greatest place

  • Compare the digits in ones place. The decimal with the greater digit at the ones place is greater. If the digits at ones place are equal, compare the tenths digit, and so on

  • For example: 2.4 < 2.5 < 3.1
