Relationship Between Fractions and Decimals

This topic deals with the relationship between fractions and decimals. We learn about the fractions and decimals using models and Place Value Charts. We also learn to use decimals to write money amounts.

Topic: Fractions and Decimals Using Models

  • Decimals that have 1 digit after the decimal point are “tenths”.
For example, 0.3 is another way to write the fraction 3/10 (3 tenths)

  • Decimals that have 2 digits after the decimal point are “hundredths”.
For example, 0.50 is another way to write the fraction 50/100 (50 hundredths)

  • Decimals that have 3 digits after the decimal point are “thousandths”
For example, 0.123 is another way to write the fraction 123/100 (123 thousandths)

  • Fractions that name the same number are called equivalent fractions. For example 60/100 = 6/10

  • Decimals that name the same number are called equivalent decimals. For example 0.60 = 0.6

Topic: Decimals Greater Than One

  • Decimals that have 1 digit after the decimal point are “tenths”

  • Decimals that have 2 digits after the decimal point are “hundredths”

  • Decimals that have 3 digits after the decimal point are “thousandths”

  • One and six tenths = 1 + 6/10; in decimals it can be written as 1.6

Topic: Decimals to Write Money

  • 1 dollar = 100 cents = 10 dimes; 1 dime = 10 cents

  • 30 cents = 30 hundredths of a dollar = 30/100 of a dollar; in decimals it can be written as $0.30

  • 1 dollar and 30 cents = 1$ + $0.30 = $1.30
