Subtraction of Decimals

This topic deals with the subtraction of decimals. We also learn to use models to subtract decimals.

Topic: Subtract Decimals

  • We can use models to subtract decimals

  • For example, to find 2.50 - 1.35, model 2.50 and cut 1.35 from it and find the amount left

  • Steps to follow to subtract decimals (2.31 - 1.12):
Step 1: Line up the decimal points

Step 2: Subtract each place. Regroup if needed. Write the decimal point

2 hundredths cannot be subtracted from 1 hundredth, so regroup.
    3 tenths and 1 hundredth = 2 tenths and 11 hundredths
    11 hundredths - 2 hundredths = 9 hundredths

    Similarly, subtract each place.
    2.31 - 1.12 = 1.19
