Parts of a Whole

In this topic, we learn to read and write fractions for parts of regions.

Topic: Parts of a Whole

  • A fraction is written as a/b, with two whole numbers that are separated by a fraction bar

  • The top number (a) is called the numerator and the bottom number (b) is called the denominator

  • Numerator describes the number of parts being considered

  • Denominator describes the number of equal parts into which the whole is divided

  • When naming a fraction, we name the numerator first. Then we name the denominator. For example: the fraction 3/8 is read as three-eighths
