3D Figures

This topic introduces 3-dimensional figures. A student learns to identify, describe, and classify spheres, cones, cylinders, prisms, pyramids, and cubes.

Topic: Polyhedron - Faces, Vertices, Edges

  • A polyhedron is a three-dimensional object with flat surfaces, called faces that are polygons

  • When two faces of a three dimensional figure share a side, they form an edge

  • A point at which three or more edges meet is a vertex (plural: vertices)

  • We can sort 3-dimensional figures by characteristics. A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. A sphere has 1 curved surface. A cone has 1 curved side, 1 face, 1 edge, and 1 vertex

  • A cylinder has 1 curved side, 2 faces, and 2 edges. A pyramid has 5 faces, 8 edges, and 5 vertices

Topic: Prisms and Cylinders

  • A polyhedron is a three-dimensional object with flat surfaces, called faces. Each face is a polygon

  • A prism is a polyhedron with two congruent, parallel bases, and other faces that are all parallelograms

  • A prism is named using the shape of its base. For example, a prism with triangular bases is called a triangular prism

  • A cylinder has two circular bases that have the same size and shape. The bases are parallel which means that the bases are everywhere the same distance apart, and are connected by a curved surface

Topic: Pyramids and Cones

  • A polyhedron is a three-dimensional object with flat surfaces, called faces. Each face is a polygon

  • A pyramid has one polygon-shaped base and three or more triangular faces that share a common vertex

  • A pyramid is named using the shape of its base. For example, a pyramid with a triangular base is called a triangular pyramid

  • A cone has a circular base and a curved surface that comes to a point. A cone is not a polyhedron because not every base is a polygon

  • A sphere does not have edges, vertices and faces
