Area

This topic introduces areas. We learn to determine the area of rectangular figures by placing them on grids.

Topic: Area of a Rectangular Figure

  • Area is the number of square units needed to cover a region or figure

  • We can calculate the area of a rectangle by placing it on a grid of square. The number squares in the rectangle is the area

  • We can also find the area (total number of squares that cover the rectangle) by multiplying the number of rows of squares by the number of squares in each row

  • Width of the rectangle = Number of rows
Length of the rectangle = Number of squares in each row

  • So, area of a rectangle = Number of rows x Number of squares in each row = Length x Width

Topic: Area of a Complex Figure

  • Area is the number of square units needed to cover a region of the figure.
It is measured in square units. For example: square inches (inches2), square feet (ft2) etc

  • We can calculate the area by placing the rectangle on a grid of square. The number of squares in the rectangle is the area

  • We can also find the area (total number of squares that cover the rectangle) by multiplying the number of rows of squares by the number of squares in each row

  • To find the area of a complex figure, split the figure into 2 or more rectangles, count the number of squares in each and add

  • Area of a rectangle = Length x Width
