Probability of Events in an Experiment

In this topic, we learn to describe and find the probability of various events in an experiment.

Topic: Chance and Probability

  • The chance or likelihood of something happening is called its probability

  • We can describe probability using the words - likely, equally likely, certain, unlikely, or impossible

  • When there is a very small chance that an event happens, the event is said to be unlikely. When there is quite a good chance that an event happens, that event is said to be likely

  • When there is an equal chance that an event happens or it does not, the event is said to be as likely as not

  • When there is no chance that an event happens, the event is said to be impossible. When there is a definite chance that an event happens, the event is said to be certain

Topic: Finding Probability

  • Probability is a number that defines the chance or likelihood an event has to occur

  • It is a number from 0 to 1. A probability of 0 means the event is impossible. For example, the probability that you will live to the age of 200 is 0

  • A probability of 1 means the event is certain. For example, the probability that the sun will rise tomorrow is 1

  • Probability of an event = Number of favorable outcomes/Number of possible outcomes
