Volume of Prisms

In this topic, we will learn to find the volume of rectangular prisms and triangular prisms.

Topic: Volume of a Rectangular Prism

  • Volume is the number of cubic units needed to fill a space

  • Volume can be found by counting the number or cubes in a figure

  • Volume of a prism = Area of the base x Height

  • Volume of a rectangular prism = Length x Width x height

Topic: Volume of a Triangular Prism

  • Volume is the number of cubic units needed to fill a space

  • Volume of a prism = Area of the base x Height

  • Area of a triangle = 1/2 x Base x Height

Topic: Problem Solving Application

  • A number of cubic boxes can be packed in cases of different dimensions

  • To pack N cubes in a case, volume of N cubes should be equal to volume of the case

  • To determine various dimensions for the case, arrange the cubes in different ways and compute their total dimensions

  • Each dimension (length, width or height) of the case is a factor of the volume
