Surface Areas of Pyramids and Cones

In this topic, we will learn to find surface areas of pyramids and cones.

Topic: Surface Areas - Pyramids

  • The surface area of a solid is the sum of the areas of its surfaces

  • A net is the pattern made when the surface of a three-dimensional figure is laid out flat showing each face of the figure

  • Surface area of a pyramid = Base area (B) + Lateral area (F)

  • The lateral area (F) is one half times the product of base perimeter and slant height l
    F = 1/2 x Pl, where P = Perimeter of the base, l = Slant height

Topic: Surface Areas - Cones

  • The surface area of a solid is the sum of the areas of its surfaces

  • A net is the pattern made when the surface of a three-dimensional figure is laid out flat showing each face of the figure

  • Surface area of a cone = Base area (B) + Lateral area (F) = πr2 + πrl, where π = 3.14 or 22/7, r = Radius, l = Slant height

  • In a right cone, the radius (r), height (h), and the slant height (l) form a right triangle
     r2 + h2 = l2

Topic: Word Problems

  • Surface area of a pyramid = Base area (B) + Lateral area (F)

  • F = 1/2 x Pl, where P = Perimeter of the base, l = Slant height

  • Surface area of a cone = Base area (B) + Lateral area (F) = πr2 + πrl, where π = 3.14 or 22/7, r = Radius, l = Slant height

  • In a right cone, the radius (r), height (h), and the slant height (l) form a right triangle
    r2 + h2 = l2

Topic: Areas of Composite Figures

  • Surface area of a pyramid = Base area (B) + Lateral area (F)

  • F = 1/2 x Pl, where P = Perimeter of the base, l = Slant height

  • Surface area of a cone = Base area (B) + Lateral area (F) = πr2 + πrl, where π = 3.14 or 22/7, r = Radius, l = Slant height

  • In a right cone, the radius (r), height (h), and the slant height (l) form a right triangle
    r2 + h2 = l2
