Volume of Cones and Pyramids

This topic covers the concept of volume of cones and pyramids and application problems based on them. How to find the volume of complex solids is also covered.

Topic: Volume of Pyramids

  • A pyramid is a three dimensional figure whose base is a polygon and all of the other faces are triangles. It is named using the shape of its base. For example, a square pyramid has a square base

  • The Volume (V) of a pyramid is one third of the area of the base (B) times the height (h). The Base of the pyramid can be any polygonal figure (square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon......etc.)

  • Volume of a pyramid = 1/3 (Area of the base x Height of the pyramid)

  • When the height of the pyramid is doubled, the volume doubles

  • The volume of a pyramid is one third the volume of a prism with the same the base area and height

Topic: Volume of Cones

  • A cone has a circular base. The height of a cone is measured from the highest point to the base along a line perpendicular to the base

  • Volume of a cone = 1/3 (Area of the base x Height of the cone)

  • Volume of a cone = = 1/3 (∏r2 x h)

  • The volume of a cone is one third the volume of a cylinder with the same base area and height

  • When the radius of a cone is doubled, the volume becomes 4 times the original volume. When the height is doubled, the volume becomes 2 times the original volume

Topic: Volume of Complex Solids

  • A complex solid is a solid that is made up of more than one 3 dimensional figure

  • Volume of a prism = Area of the base x Height of the prism

  • Volume of a pyramid = 1/3 (Area of base x Height of the pyramid)

  • The volume of a pyramid is one third the volume of a prism with the same base area and height
