Time and Temperature

In this topic, we will learn the basic concepts of measures of time and temperature.

Topic: Convert and Compare Measures of Time

  • To compare measurements in different units, convert them into a common unit

  • The various conversion factors used for time are:
    1 year = 12 months (mo)
    1 year = 365 days
    1 year = 52 weeks
    1 day = 24 hours (hr)
    1 hour = 60 minutes (min)
    1 min = 60 seconds (s

Topic: Add/Subtract Measures of Time

  • To add the measures of time, place them one below the other and add seconds first, then minutes, and finally the hours

  • To subtract the measures of time, place them one below the other and subtract seconds first, then minutes, and finally the hours

Topic: Elapsed Time

  • The 12 "a.m." hours extends from midnight (12 a.m.) to the moment just before noon (12 p.m.)

  • The 12 "p.m." hours extend from noon to the moment just before midnight

  • To find the time interval between the time measures of a.m. and p.m., make sure to break the time interval into before and after noon
For example, the number of hours between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. can be calculated as:
    Number of hours from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. (midnight) = 6
    Number of hours from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. = 3

    Total number of hours = 6 + 3 = 9 hours

Topic: Conversion and Calculation with Temperature

  • To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, use C = 5/9 (F - 32)

  • To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, use F = (9/5 x C) + 32

  • To add or subtract the measures of temperature, convert them to a common unit
