Divide by 2 through 12

In this topic, we learn to divide by 2 through 12.

Topic: Relate Multiplication and Division

  • We can use a related multiplication fact to divide two numbers. For example to find 32 ÷ 8, we can use 4 x 8 = 32 as the multiplication fact

  • In 32 ÷ 8 = 4; 32 is called the dividend; 8 is called the divisor, and 4 is called the quotient

  • We can multiply by 0, but we cannot divide by zero. For example, 0 x 9 = 0 and 9 x 0 = 0, but 9 ÷ 0 has no answer

Topic: Extended Division Facts

  • Numbers such as 10, 100, and 1000 are called powers of 10

  • To divide a whole number that ends in zeros by a power of 10; use the following method:
    a) Cross out zeros in the number, starting at the ones place
    b) Cross out as many zeros as there are zeros in the power of 10
    To find 200 ÷ 10, cross out 1 zero starting at the ones place; 200 ÷ 10 = 20

  • If we know the basic division facts, we can solve problems such as 240 ÷ 3 mentally. For example: To find 240 ÷ 3, we can use 24 ÷ 3 = 8 as the basic division fact.
    240 ÷ 3 = 10 x (24 ÷ 3) = 10 x 8 = 80
