Multiply by 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10

In this topic, we learn to multiply by 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Topic: Multiply by 5, 7, and 8

  • To multiply two numbers we can use the skip-count method. For example: to find 5 x 5, skip-count by fives 5 times

  • A known fact can also be used to multiply two numbers. For example: to find 8 x 6, 4 x 6 can be used as a known fact

  • The numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 are multiples of 5

  • The numbers 7, 14, 21, and 28 are multiples of 7

Topic: Multiply by 9 and 10

  • We can use mental math to find multiplication of a number by 10. For example: 6 x 10 = 6 tens = 60

  • We can use a fact with a factor of 10 to multiply by 9. For example: To find 9 x 4, we will use 10 x 4 as the fact

  • 9 x 4 = (10 x 4) - 4 = 40 - 4 = 36

  • When we multiply a number by 9, the first digit of the product is one less than the number multiplied by nine. For example: 9 x 5 = 45, where 4 is one less than 5

  • When we multiply a number by 9, the digits in the product add up to 9. For example: 9 x 5 = 45; 4 + 5 = 9
