Multiplication of Fractions

This topic covers the multiplication of fractions by whole numbers, fractions and mixed numbers.

Topic: Multiplication by Whole Numbers

  • To multiply a fraction by a whole number we can use two methods:

    Method 1: Repeated addition
    For example,
3 x (1/8) can be calculated by adding 1/8 three times

    Method 2: Multiply
    For example,
3/4 x 4/5 can be calculated by multiplying numerators and denominators

  • A whole number can be written as an improper fraction with 1 in the denominator.

    So, 5 = 5/1

Topic: Multiplication by Fractions

  • To multiply two fractions, multiply numerators of both the fractions and denominators of both the fractions.

    For example,
    1/3 x 3/5 = (1 x 3)/(3 x 5) = 3/15

Topic: Multiplication by Mixed Numbers

  • To multiply a fraction by a mixed number, first write mixed number as an improper fraction

  • To multiply two fractions, multiply numerators of both the fractions and denominators of both the fractions
