Divide by Fractions

In this track, we learn to divide by fractions.

Topic: Using Models

  • A division problem like 6 ¸ 1/2 means 'how many 1/2's are there in 6?'

Topic: Divide Using Reciprocals

  • Dividing by fractions is same as multiplying by the reciprocal of the divisor. Reciprocals are 2 numbers whose product is 1

  • To find the reciprocal of a fraction turn the fraction upside down. For example, reciprocal of 7/3 is 3/7

  • 7/2 ÷ 7/3 = 7/2 x 3/7

Topic: Common Denominator Division

  • To solve a fraction division problem, rename both dividend and divisor as fractions with a common denominator. Then divide the numerators, and the denominators

  • For example: To find 3 ÷ 1/2

  • = 3/1 = (3 x 2)/(1 x 2) = 6/2
    Now, find 6/2 ÷ 1/2 = (6 ÷ 1)/(2 ÷ 2) =  6/1 = 6
