Multiply Mixed Numbers and Fractions

In this topic we learn to multiply mixed numbers and fractions. We also learn to multiply mixed numbers.

Topic: Multiply Mixed Numbers by Fractions

  • Steps to follow to multiply a mixed number by a fraction (1/5 x 17 1/2):
    Step 1: Rename the mixed number as an improper fraction. 17 1/2 = ((2 x 17) + 1)/2
Step 2: Divide the numerators and denominators by common factors, and then multiply
    1/5 x 35/2 = 1/1 x 7/2 = 7/2
    Step 3: Simplify
    7/5 = 3 1/2

Topic: Multiply Mixed Numbers

  • Steps to follow to multiply a mixed number by a mixed number (1 2/5 x 2 1/2):
    Step 1: Rename each mixed number as an improper fraction. 1 2/5 = ((5 x 1) + 2)/5 and 2 1/2 = ((2 x 2) + 1)/2
Step 2: Divide by common factors, and then multiply
    7/5 x 5/2 = 7/1 x 1/2 = 7/2
    Step 3: Simplify
    7/2 = 3 1/2

Topic: Multiplication Using Partial Products

  • To multiply a mixed number with a fraction or a mixed number, we can use partial products

  • Distributive Property is used to find the partial products

  • For example, 1 1/2 x 1 1/3 = (1 + 1/2) x (1 + 1/3)
    Partial products are: (1 x 1), (1 x 1/3), (1/2 x 1), (1/2 x 1/3)

  • Add the partial products to get the result
