    Step 2: Divide the numerator and denominator by common factors (if any)
    Step 3: Multiply the numerators, and the denominators
    Step 4: Simplify the result

  • Steps to multiply mixed number and whole number (4 x 2 1/3):

    Step 1: Use the Distributive Property to rename the mixed number
    4 x 2 1/3 = (4 x 2) + (4 x 1/3)

    Step 2: Multiply each addend 
    (4 x 2) + (4 x 1/3) = 8 + 4/3
      
    Step 3: Simplify and add
    8 + 4/3 = 8 + 1 1/3 = 9 1/3
