Multiply by One Digit Number

This topic deals with the concept of multiplication of two digit numbers by one digit numbers. We also learn to use models and the partial-products method to multiply the number.

Topic: Multiplication Using Models

  • To multiply two numbers using models, model the numbers in groups

  • Combine the groups of ones and tens separately

  • Regroup the ones and tens, and find the total

Topic: Partial-Products Method

  • To multiply using partial products, divide the number into two parts. For example, to multiply 35 by 3, divide 35 into 30 and 5

  • Multiply each part separately, e.g. 30 x 3 and 5 x 3

  • Add the two partial products

Topic: Multiplication by 1-Digit Numbers

  • To multiply two numbers, first multiply the ones and then the tens and add both the products

  • If ones is greater than 9, we need to regroup

  • 14 ones is equal to 1 tens and 4 ones

Topic: Multiplication by Counting Digits

  • When multiplying numbers that contain decimals, first multiply as with whole numbers, and then count the number of decimal places in each factor

  • Add the total number of places from both factors. Move the decimal point that many places to the left in the product
