Ordered Pairs on Coordinate Plane

In this topic, we will learn to plot and identify ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. We will also learn to solve application problems based on the coordinate plane.

Topic: Quadrants and Coordinates

  • A coordinate plane is a plane containing a horizontal number line, the x-axis, and a vertical number line, the y-axis

  • The coordinates of a point are given by an ordered pair. An ordered pair is a pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane

  • The intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis is called the origin. The coordinates of the origin are (0, 0)

  • The points to the left of 0 on a coordinate plane are negative and to the right of zero are positive. The points up from zero on a coordinate plane are positive and down from zero are negative

  • Quadrant I has both the coordinates positive and Quadrant III has both the coordinates negative. Quadrant II has x-coordinate negative and y-coordinate positive. Quadrant IV has x-coordinate positive and y-coordinate negative

Topic: Plotting Points

  • To plot a point (x, y) on a coordinate plane, move x units right/left and y units up/down depending on the signs of the x and y coordinates

  • Area of a square = Side x Side and perimeter = 4 x s

Topic: Identifying Points

  • Moving towards the right of a point refers to moving towards the positive x-axis whereas moving towards the left refers to moving towards the negative x -axis

  • Moving up from a point refers to moving towards the positive y-axis whereas moving down from a point refers to moving towards the negative y-axis

  • Starting at the origin, the positive x-axis points to the east and the negative x-axis points to west

  • Starting at the origin, the positive y-axis points to the north and the negative y-axis points to south
