Representing Percents

This topic covers modeling percents using grids, and representation of percents as fractions and decimals.

Topic: Percent of Shaded Area

  • A percent (%) is a special ratio or a special way of representing a fraction in which the denominator is always 100.
    n% =  n
            100

  • To identify a percent, count the number of shaded squares (n) and total squares (possibly 100)
    So, percent = n = n%
                        100

Topic: Percent in Fraction and Decimal

  • To write a percent as a fraction, divide the number by 100.
    E.g.  5% = 5/100

  • To write a percent as a decimal, do the following:
Step 1: Write the percent as a fraction with 100 as the denominator
Step 2: Then express the fraction as a decimal
